The Future of Privatization in Higher Education: Post-Pandemic
Thursday, June 25
Program begins at 12 PM EST
The privatization of public services, including higher education, has been touted for decades by some federal, state, and local policymakers and politicians as a necessity in the age of fiscal austerity. The decision to privatize can have major adverse consequences by placing profit-making ahead of human needs. This can lead to the deterioration of services adversely impacting the most vulnerable including communities of color. Recent disasters in Puerto Rico, New Orleans, and elsewhere have been used as the pretext for massive privatization programs in those areas.
This webinar will examine the future of privatization in higher education following the devastation caused by COVID-19. The speakers will examine the privatization and resistance at the University of Puerto Rico, the challenges to privatization at California State University, the use of public-private partnerships on campus, and the renewed federal promotion of the for-profit higher education industry.
The webinar is part of a series in May and June co-presented by Hunter College's National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions and the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute that focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on labor and higher education issues. This webinar has been organized in conjunction with In the Public Interest, a research and policy center on privatization and responsible contracting.
